The first step of your New Year clean is to get rid of clutter or rubbish that is taking up valuable space in your home. The key to minimising that cluttered feel is to make sure that everything has a place.
Decluttering doesn’t have to mean getting rid of everything. You can still cultivate an eclectic atmosphere with plenty of ornaments, pieces of artwork and patterned fabrics – just make sure that each item has its own space.Declutter your wardrobe
One step a lot of people forget when it comes to decluttering is your wardrobe interior. It’s all too easy to stuff items that don’t have a place inside your wardrobe or fitted furniture, close the doors and forget all about them. But decluttering your wardrobe makes it so much easier to find the perfect outfit, accessory or bag.
The first step is to take everything out of your wardrobe and give the inside a good dust. Next, separate your belongings into three piles: keep, donate and recycle. The clothes and accessories you wear regularly should go in the keep pile, along with anything that holds sentimental value for you.
Place anything that is still of good quality, but that you don’t wear anymore into the donate pile to take it to your local charity shop. Or, you could try selling items on a resell platform, such as eBay or Vinted for a little boost to your finances this New Year! Anything broken or ripped beyond repair, place into the recycle pile.
Finally, put everything in the keep pile back into your wardrobe, keeping to an organisational system that works for you. Try organising by event – keeping work clothes on the left, casual clothes in the centre and formal clothes on the right. Alternatively, you could order your clothes by colour or season.
This simple but effective decluttering method can also work elsewhere in your house – for instance, if you’re running out of room in your kitchen cupboards, decide whether you really use all of the equipment you have and donate what you don’t need. Too many books or vinyl records in your living space? Keep only your favourites and sell the others, or gift them to a likeminded friend! The New Year clean
Once you’ve made sure that everything has its place and any clutter has been sold, donated or recycled, it’s time to begin the New Year clean.
Be thorough! Hoover, scrub, mop and dust throughout your home – making sure to clean under furniture and behind larger items, like your fridge. Tackle the cleaning jobs that most of us only do a few times a year, like scrubbing down your skirting boards and deep cleaning your carpets.
Don’t forget to dust your light fittings, hoover any fabric curtains, wash your windows and give your fridge interior a scrub!
Once you reach the end of your first 2025 clean, you’ll be left with a beautiful, fresh, organised space to enjoy.
New Year storage hacks
When it comes to New Year organisation, we believe fitted furniture is the best way to keep your home clutter-free while maintaining your chosen aesthetic.
Our sliding door wardrobes provide extra storage without encroaching on your precious floor space, while our fitted bedroom furniture helps create a cohesive storage aesthetic across the whole room.
With The Sliding Door Wardrobe Company, you can store far more than just clothes inside your wardrobe, thanks to our customisable interiors. Add fitted shelving and downlighting, perfect for not only storing but displaying your favourite bags and shoes. You could also add fitted drawers to safely store makeup or jewellery.
Need somewhere to store your home entertainment system or speaker? Our fitted media walls provide you with the perfect storage space, while minimising the visibility of wires and providing extra space to display photographs and ornaments.
Plus, what about once the weather begins to warm up again? Where to store your extra blankets, cushions and thick duvets you bring out for the winter season? Invest in fitted cupboards to keep these items out of sight and behind closed doors until you need them again next winter.
